Hampton Court Palace was originally built by Thomas, Cardinal Wolsey, during the regin of Henry VIII. When the issue of the dissolution of the King's marriage to Catherine of Aragon came about, the Cardinal saw his favor with the King begin to wane.

After the Cardinal made a comment to the King to the effect of 'anything that I have is yours', Henry decided that the Cardinal just made a gift of Hampton Court Palace! Once Henry VIII came into possesion of the Palace, he began to expand and redecorate it to his own tastes.
