On the way to the entrance
to Pompeii |
Vesuvius as seen on the walk
to the entrance |
Nearing the entrance. The
sloped walkway in the middle of the picture is where you actually
make your way into the ruins |
More of the walk up to the
entrance |
Finally inside! A shadowy
view of the tribunal at the back of the basilica in the forum |
Along the side of the basilica |
View of Vesuvius from the

The capital of one of the

Vesuvius seen across the ruins
of the forum |
Ruins of buildings within
the complex |
From atop the Amphitheatre,
looking across at Vesuvius. A reconstructed vinyard is visible
in the middle of the photo |
Brick detail and fragments
of plaster on a wall |
Further into the town - it
wasn't as crowded on the avenues as it was back up at the forum.
Some of the well preserved streets, such as this one, really
gave me a feel for what the town may have been like 2000 years
earlier. |

Looking from th street through
one of the many large houses in Pompeii |
Another deserted street |
A public drinking fountain,
and yes, the water spout (made of lead) is actually from the
Roman era. |
A preserved fresco at the
end of a thermopolium, probably something similar to a
modern-day cafeteria or fast food restaurant. |
The artium and intricate mosaic
floor of a house |
Brick columns (and lens flare) |
Vesuvius at the end of a well
preserved road |
Vesuvius seen over ruined
walls |
Vesuvius seen through a square
arch |
Same view as above, but taken
from further back |
Some interesting roots of
plants growing atop some of the ruins |
The large theater at Pompeii,
with the gladiator barracks off to the right |
From the top of the amphitheater
walls, looking at the palestra (gymnasium) |
The amphitheater at Pompeii,
with a nice view of the mountains |
